Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
