RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," he added. "They were among numerous UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
